German's famous compound words are a transcription minefield — Geschwindigkeitsbegrenzung is one word, and a good transcript has to know that. Whisper AI does, and it also capitalizes nouns correctly and writes umlauts and ß properly. Standard German from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland transcribes well; broad dialect (Bairisch, Schwiizerdütsch) is best spoken a touch closer to Hochdeutsch.

Does it capitalize German nouns correctly?
Yes — Substantive werden großgeschrieben, automatically. Umlauts (ä, ö, ü) and ß are written properly too.
What about Austrian and Swiss German?
Standard German with an Austrian or Swiss accent transcribes well. Actual Schwiizerdütsch dialect is harder — speak closer to Hochdeutsch for best results.
Can it handle long compound words?
Yes — compounds are written as single words the way German requires, not split apart phonetically.
Can I transcribe German voice notes?
