Why would you transcribe an MP4?
MP4 is where spoken words go to hide: recorded Zoom and Meet calls, lecture captures, screen recordings with narration, webinar downloads, interview footage from your phone. The words are in there — you just can't search, quote, or skim them. Most transcription workflows make you rip the audio track out first with ffmpeg or a converter site. Voice to Text skips that: upload the .mp4 as-is, up to 200 MB, and it transcribes the audio track directly.
How it works
From .mp4 to text in three steps
Open the side panel
Click the Voice to Text icon in Chrome. The panel opens next to any page and switches to Upload mode with one tap.
Drop in your .mp4 video
Drag the recording into the panel — no audio-extraction step. Whisper AI transcribes the soundtrack, then the file is deleted immediately.
Edit, copy, or download
The full transcript appears in the panel. Pull out quotes, tidy the text, then copy it anywhere or download it.

Do I need to extract the audio first?
No — that's the point. Upload the .mp4 as-is and the audio track is transcribed directly. Files up to 200 MB are supported.
My meeting recording is bigger than 200 MB — now what?
Extract just the audio (much smaller): VLC or ffmpeg can save the soundtrack as MP3 in one step, and an hour of speech is only tens of megabytes.
Does it identify who's speaking?
No — you get one continuous transcript without speaker labels. For meeting notes with speaker names, a dedicated meeting tool like Otter fits better; see the honest comparison.
